HARRISONBURG -- The next time you turn on your faucet you may not want to leave it on for very long. On Tuesday, Harrisonburg City Council made a decision to raise water and sewer fees.

Council voted on the price at a previous meeting, but needed a public hearing to officially pass the increase. Sewer fees will go up 19 cents for every 1,000 gallons.

The water fees will go up seven cents for every 1,000 gallons.

Harrisonburg Vice-Mayor Charles Chenault said it's needed to keep everything up to code.

"We want to make sure that we have a water sewer system that not only provides the best in potable water and a sewage system that works. But probably as important is that it is a environmentally sound and friendly as it can be," said Chenault.

The fee increase will take effect on July 1.
