WAYNESBORO, Va. (WHSV) -- There's only one week till Halloween, but some kids in Waynesboro might have to find a new place to get candy.

The city's "trick-or-treat trail" event has been canceled.

The trail allows kids to trick-or-treat through Downtown Waynesboro, but this year, the work being done along many of the city's sidewalks has scared off the event because of concerns about safety near the construction sites.

There is another option, "Avante has offered downtown businesses to come and put up a booth at their event on Halloween, so folks that maybe were going to come down here might want to go up and see them at Avante," said Kimberly Watters, with Waynesboro Downtown Development.

Watters said her office didn't want to have to cancel the event, but with the streetscape work, she said they didn't have much of a choice.
