STAUNTON, Va -- Middlebrook Ave has several businesses set up and nearly all of them are owned by women. Owners said they all help each other out when it comes to running a business.

More women are starting to own businesses, especially in fields once dominated by men.

Monica Wilson owns Monica Wilson Photography. She moved in about three months ago and she has bonded with other business owners on Middlebrook Ave.

Wilson said she and other owners on the avenue encourage each other and that it is a good way to build a community of entrepreneurship.

“They welcomed me with open arms here when I opened up and started working. Since we started working together on events, we've had a lot of great ideas we can promote our businesses in the future,” said Wilson.

A federal law passed by in the 1970s started the trend of more women owning businesses and that helped women get loans to open up businesses.
