As the snow hit the Valley, plenty of it piled up at Massanutten, giving skiers an extra treat this season.

Many families made it out to ski today since so many kids had the day off from school.

"It was a surprise, the snow storm was great, and we saw on their website last night that they got about 22 to 24 inches of fresh powder, so we wanted to take advantage of it," said Brendan Kelly, who brought his two sons with him to ski.

The kids say this was the best snow day yet.

"It's awesome, it's the biggest snow of the year. All we've really had are a couple centimeters so far, so it's really fun," said 10-year-old Caitlyn Fendley.

Kenny Hess, the director of sports at Massanutten Ski Resort, says they got about two feet of snow on Wednesday. He says it's a great way to end the season.

"It's great for business," said Hess. "If you're going to get a storm late in March, people's interest starts to wane, and you get a two-foot dump, and people can't play golf right now, so hopefully they'll keep thinking about skiing and realize how good of skiing we have right now."

Hess says the slopes opened two weeks late this winter because of the lack of snow, but now, this snow storm has made up for it.

Hess says they already have an increase of skiers since last year, and they may be able to stay open longer this season.

That's what local skiers are hoping for.

"It's just been really good and we hope that Massanutten stays open a little bit longer because it's supposed to close really soon," said Fendley. "We hope this snow will bring more people so it stays longer."

Hess says the ski season typically ends around the third weekend in March. Right now he says they have deals for the off-season, and he expects the slopes to be busy this weekend after all that snow. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
