A longtime member of the WHSV Student Athlete Selection Committee has passed away.
Seventy-four-year-old Harry Harrison Combs of Woodstock, passed away September 3 at Consulate Health Care in Woodstock.
Combs was an avid Central High School Falcon Fan. He was an officer of Central High School Booster Club for 20 years and was an active member of the Student Athlete of the Week Committee sponsored by WHSV-TV 3 for 21 years, representing those students from Shenandoah County and surrounding areas eligible for the award.
He was a supporter of the University of Virginia sports program and an employee of the UVA Athletic Department responsible for assisting visiting coaches with press conferences. He helped to promote the Valley Baseball League by working to establish the River Bandits baseball team in Woodstock, Virginia and gave his time and energy working with the Woodstock Parks Committee.
He was a 1955 graduate of Woodstock High School and served in the United States Air Force. He spent most of his life in Shenandoah County.
He was an auto parts manager for Woodstock Garage Inc. for 26 years and a sports photographer for the Northern Virginia Daily for a number of years. He was a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Woodstock Moose Lodge #575 and Cassia Lodge #142.
The family will receive friends Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. at the Dellinger Funeral Home in Woodstock. The funeral will take place Sunday at 2 pm at Emanuel Lutheran Church.
