Grant Will Buy Social Studies Textbooks

A Rockingham County teacher was surprised Thursday morning with a gift.

Susan Melendez, a social studies teacher, works at Mountain View Elementary School.

She was awarded $1,000 for textbooks.

"I'll be using the thousand dollars to purchase social studies materials," says Melendez. "'Our America to 1865,' it's a textbook that will help in teaching the new-released SOLs this year."

The grant came from Project 3, a partnership that involves WHSV, TV3, local businesses, and area schools.

Pendleton Community Bank made this donation and chose the winner.
