Non-vocal students at a Valley elementary school will get some help thanks to a local business.
John C. Myers Elementary in Broadway was awarded a $1,000 grant Wednesday morning to buy communication devices.
Tammy Shearer, the assistance principal at the school, says, "It's going to be used for the Little Step-by-Step Communicators, and this is going to help students that are non-vocal to be more vocal. They're going to be able to hear words that are being said into these communicators. They can push the buttons and those words can be repeated back, so that they can not only hear them, but also follow through with whatever it is that's been activated on that voice communicator for them. It gives them a choice. It's a voice for them."
The grant was made as part of Project 3, a partnership involving WHSV-TV3, local businesses and area schools.
Emeritus Senior Living of Harrisonburg made the donation for the grant and chose the winner.
