Project 3 Helps Second Graders Get Hooked on Books

Second graders at Verona Elementary School will soon get to bring a piece of the school's library home.

A $1,000 grant was awarded to the school Wednesday morning as part of the Project 3 initiative.

Project 3 is a partnership involving TV-3, local businesses and area schools.

First Bank and Trust made the donation and chose the winner for this grant.

The money will buy books for all second graders to keep and take home.

“One of the things that we really notice is that children have ownership of a book and they have a say in picking out their actual subject matter or the title that they want, they're just generally more interested in actually picking up that book and reading it,” said Verona Elementary School Second-grade teacher Allison Simmons. “Whereas if I were to give them a specific book that they didn't pick out they might not show as much interest in that book. We're hoping just to generate interest in reading, by getting books in their hands."
