LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia State Police are investigating a crash on Interstate 85 in Brunswick County that left five people dead and closed all southbound lanes.
Sgt. Michelle Anaya says the collision occurred when a pickup truck traveling northbound on the southbound lane hit a car head-on around 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Anaya says four of those killed were in the car and one person was in the truck. It was unknown whether there were additional passengers in the pickup because of the magnitude of the crash.
Officials say it could take a couple of days before authorities are able to identify those killed.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says all southbound lanes remained closed Tuesday morning at mile marker 26 and traffic is being detoured.
