Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee has unveiled a tough immigration proposal.
The former Arkansas governor says he plans to stop illegal immigration with a Mexico border fence, more border patrol agents and surveillance cameras along the border.
The plan also calls for punishing employers who hire illegal immigrants. And it would pass a FAIR tax plan, which would scrap income, corporate, payroll and other taxes for a 23 percent sales tax. Huckabee says the FAIR tax would be an economic disincentive for illegal immigration.
He says the plan would also force illegal immigrants to return to their home countries before applying to return to the U.S.
A spokesman for rival Fred Thompson says Huckabee's plan "contradicts everything he did as governor" of Arkansas.
