Record-Breaking Campaign Fundraising in Virginia

According to newly filed campaign finance reports, candidates in last month's Virginia legislative elections raised a record of slightly more than $67.2 million.

That figure more than doubles the $30.9 million House and Senate candidates raised in 2003, the last election where all 140 General Assembly seats were in play.

That doesn't count cash raised since by political action committees.

Senate candidates raised a total of $35.3 million since January 2004, the start of the political cycle that coincides with the Senate's four-year terms.

House candidates, who run for two-year terms, pulled in $31.8 million since January 2006.

The top-grossing candidate was Republican Senator Jeannemarie Devolites Davis, who received had $1.9 million at her disposal in losing to Democrat J. Chapman Petersen.
