Former state Finance Secretary Jody Wagner has announced her candidacy for lieutenant governor.
The Democrat ran a close race for a congressional seat eight years ago. If she wins her party's nomination, her likely opponent will be Republican incumbent Bill Bolling, who has announced plans to seek re-election next year.
Wagner announced her plans Friday in a Web video e-mailed to supporters. She emphasized her record of helping Virginia keep its finances in order. Before serving as finance secretary, Wagner was state treasurer from 2002 to 2006.
In 2000, Wagner finished about four percentage points behind Republican Ed Schrock in her bid for the 2nd District congressional seat in Hampton Roads. Schrock resigned in 2004 amid claims on a blog that he had used a gay dating service to solicit sex with another man.
