Virginia's social conservatives aren't abandoning Republican gubernatorial hopeful Bob McDonnell after he renounced many of the strong beliefs he espoused in a college thesis 20 years ago.

But conservative leaders said Tuesday McDonnell's got to be careful not to distance himself too far from the Christian conservative voters that were the first and staunchest base of support for his 18-year career in state politics.

The Family Foundation's Victoria Cobb says voters her organization represents will be watching McDonnell. She says those people have considered him their champion and they need to continue to view him that way if he is to keep their support.

Liberty University Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. says times have changed since the '80s and people understand.
