In less than two weeks, voters in Rockingham County will decide if they want to add a four-percent tax for eating out.
Bill Kyger from the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors discussed the proposed meals tax with parents at Ottobine Elementary School Thursday night.
Kyger explained that it will apply only to restaurants that are outside of town limits, and it will not affect nonprofit organizations or school lunches.
A similar proposal failed by a narrow vote in November 2008.
All the money will go to local schools. Kyger says that many other locations in Virginia have a similar system.
"I think once [voters] understand that when you go to other localities in Virginia, you're paying a meals tax to for other childrens' education," says Kyger. "So you are leveraging your dollars with their dollars so that their children can have more advantage than your children in public schools."
Several Rockingham County restaurant owners are against the meals tax. They say it would drive away business when they are already struggling because of the economy.

I think they will raise the property tax no matter what
More you give more they want, it never ends
Property owners are crazy not to support the meals tax. The money has to come from somewhere& the meals tax will prevent the need to raise real estate taxes. Think about it!
