Staunton, Va. Getting time off for the General Assembly will not come easy for a local legislator and teacher.

The Augusta County School Board has denied Del. Dickie Bell 15 days of paid civic leave.
Bell requested the days off from his job as a special education teacher at Riverheads High School for the next legislative session.
While he expressed disappointment in the decision, Bell says it will not affect his duties at either job.
Bell adds, "I don't mind going to session with unpaid leave of absence. There are just opportunities here and there that you have to represent the area and be away. Civic leave seemed like a reasonable option to me."
The unpaid days away from his teaching position will cost Bell more than $2,000.

I am glad! hard times! everyone makes sacrifices! all money' left over go back to local government! maybe they can save there area school's or help save the ones it a crisis ! General assembly makes money and then denis area's! great move!
I'm sorry that Mr. Bell will not receive paid leave. I also understand that his leave would put Augusta County in a bind financially if they had to pay Mr. Bell's salary and a substitute. Maybe they could reach some type of arrangement where Mr. Bell could pay the substitute out of his salary and then Mr. Bell could get whatever (if anything) was left over?
I'm having a hard time understanding why this Republican Delegate thinks he should be paid by his School Division while he's in Richmond and collecting his $17,000 annual salary as a Delegate? This is a joke story, right?
