HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- There is less than a month until the Democratic Primary in Virginia for statewide offices and this year Democrats in the area will not have a candidate to challenge Congressman Bob Goodlatte, who represents the state's 6th Congressional District.

Bruce Elder, a Staunton City Councilman, dropped out of the race for health reasons and after that, local party leaders decided not to have anyone run because there wasn't enough time to get name recognition and fundraising. Even if they decided to run a candidate, he or she would have faced a tough challenge.

Goodlatte has been in office since 1993 and has a lot of support in the region.

In 2012, he defeated Andy Schmookler by more than 30 percent.

Joe Fitzgerald, the 6th District Democratic Chair, said it would take a lot to take down the popular candidate and they are getting ready for a challenge again in two years..

"Bob Goodlatte is certainly in a strong position. I don't think that necessarily equates to a job for life. It is a strongly republican district, but what we found in carrying, for instance, Harrisonburg and Staunton for Obama, for Kaine, for Warner, it is people who voted Republican for a long time can be convinced otherwise," said Fitzgerald.

Goodlatte does still have at least two challengers from other parties, including a libertarian candidate from Staunton.

It's not likely either will pose a significant threat, meaning Goodlatte will likely keep his seat in congress for at least two more years. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
