HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Former President Bill Clinton joined Virginia's Democratic governor candidate Terry McAuliffe in Harrisonburg for a rally Tuesday.

One of the major messages at the event was the economy, while the central focus was jobs and what the next governor needs to do to create more of them in the commonwealth.

While it may be McAuliffe's campaign, Tuesday, the spotlight was on the former governor.

Clinton said he knows firsthand what a governor's priorities should be. "I don't care what anybody else says. The governor's real job is to empower people to succeed, and then try to build an economy that gives them a place to go. And under the worst of circumstances, there's always something you can do."

He believes the potential for Virginia is there. "Virginia has so many assets. It's really important that somebody get up everyday thinking about how to build that up, instead of how to tear the people up over some issue that won't shape the future though it could wreak terrible injustice."

Virginians need someone to bring them together, not tear them apart, said Clinton, "I still think it can be the prosperous, the most exciting, the most peaceful time in human history, but only if we choose cooperation over conflict," said Clinton.

It's that culture of cooperation that rippled throughout both Clinton's and McAuliffe's speeches trying to portray McAuliffe as mainstream and willing to work with both sides.

A big reason for Tuesday's rally was to get people to vote.

Clinton emphasized that this is a big election and at one point spoke directly to the college students there, telling them this election is about them, that they're the biggest stakeholders in this election.
