HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The first Virginia U.S. Senate debate is scheduled for July 26 at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. The debate will be between Democratic Senator Mark Warner and Republican candidate Ed Gillespie.

The event will be streamed online for the entire state to watch as it's happening.

"This has become a kick-off type event early in the summer before the real campaign starts. Traditionally in Virginia, campaigns don't start until after Labor Day, but now because of the technology they start almost immediately. So this campaign will start immediately after that debate," said Dr. Bob Roberts, a political science professor at James Madison University.

Roberts also said that because of advancing technology, debates are now more about creating an image for the candidate than conveying viewpoints.
