WEYERS CAVE -- Terry McAuliffe, the Democratic candidate for governor, toured Blue Ridge Community College to get ideas on how to create more jobs. McAuliffe is touring all the community colleges in the Commonwealth. He has already toured more than 10.

He said college leaders are asking for more funds and autonomy. McAuliffe talked to BRCC leaders about what they need.

They said more funds and staff could help them develop better programs.

McAuliffe said Virginia's economy will take a big hit with sequestration. That's why, he said, we have to be more competitive.

He said three in five Virginians pursuing higher education go to community colleges. McAuliffe said graduates could be more skilled with better technology and professors. That would help the economy and generate more jobs.

"I always view education not as an expense, but an investment and if I'm investing dollars and I have a multiplier and I'm creating jobs and I'm making money, which allows me to power money back into the system, that's why I should be doing as governor,” said McAuliffe.

He says this is also an opportunity to talk to students about their own ideas.
