BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) -- The fight for control of Congress has taken a turn as polls have seen a huge swing in just a few weeks.

As focus on Capitol Hill shifts from the shutdown to problems plaguing the president's signature legislation so have voters' views on the two parties in power.

"It's an eye-catching swing of nearly historic proportions given the brevity of the time," said Dr. Steve Longenecker at Bridgewater College.

Looking ahead to next year's midterm elections, a new CNN/ORC poll shows Republicans have a 49-to-47 lead in a generic ballot.

Just last month, the same poll gave Democrats an eight-point lead.

Garren Shipley, a spokesman for the Republican party of Virginia said it's all because of Obamacare, which even turned the race for governor into a nail-biter.

"If Election Day had been a week later, we'd be ready to inaugurate Governor Ken Cuccinelli at this point," said Shipley.

But with 343 days until Americans head back to the ballot box, "who knows what we'll be talking about 11 or 12 months from now. Everything could shift yet again. In fact, everything could shift three or four times," said Longenecker.

For fairness and balance I also reached out to the Democratic Party of Virginia; however, their press secretary told me she could not get in touch with anybody and that she was not authorized to speak on the record.
