WEYERS CAVE-- The Republican candidates for state office stopped at Shenandoah Valley Regional airport on Monday morning. It was their first visit to the Valley since being nominated at the convention in Richmond.

The candidate for governor, Ken Cuccinelli, the lieutenant governor candidate, E.W. Jackson, and attorney general candidate, Mark Obenshain appeared together. The trio is travelling around the state on a tour after their nomination.

"We've gotta make sure that people in Virginia have a chance to fulfill their dreams, to take care of their families, to know that the lives of their children will be better than theirs, and that is what we're going to fight to tell the people of Virginia," said Jackson, a passionate speaker.

Since the ticket was formed, Democrats and even some Republicans have questioned if the ticket is too extreme to win. The candidates defended themselves. "I think people are going to take us one at a time, and look at us on the issues. I don't think I necessarily fit in the box they paint for me," said Cuccinelli.

"This is one of the quotes they used to prove how extreme I am. They said, 'This is what he said at the convention: We're going to get government off our backs,'" Jackson said. "If that's extreme, then I'm glad to join George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, and James Monroe."

It was a homecoming for Mark Obenshain, who represents parts of the Valley as a state senator. He faced a tough nomination against Del. Rob Bell. "I can feel it already. I've got the wind at my back as a result of this campaign," Obenshain said.

Now as the race is set for Republicans, they are starting to campaign in a state many now say is purple. "I think the philosophy that each of us brings in one way or another to the table is very attractive to Virginians. It's worked well for Virginia," Cuccinelli said.

The candidates headed to Roanoke after the stop at SHD.
