Volunteers Campaign to the Last Minute on Election Day

HARRISONBURG, Va -- Since the last election, there have been some changes on campaigning regulations.

"To campaign before was much simpler, whereas now they have worked very hard at identifying the voters and that sort of thing,” said Ella Massey, a Democratic volunteer. “So, we've constantly redone the way we do phone banking and the way we do canvassing."

The Republicans also agree it was a little different than the last presidential election year.

"This is completely different than four years ago,” said Tucker Obenshain, a Republican volunteer. “Republicans had virtually no presence especially in the JMU community. So, it's really cool, especially at this precinct, to see a lot of JMU students."

Virginia law requires campaigners to stay within some boundaries. Election officers say every poll must be equipped with a 40-foot string to make sure campaigners are far enough from the door.

As long as they stay that far away, they can campaign as much as they want. Officers said they did not run into any problems at Spotswood Elementary School.

From phone calls to door-to-door campaigning to being at the polls, volunteers have been dedicated to the end.

"I do not feel confident that under a Democratic administration, I will be able to get a job, and move on and grow up,” Obenshain said. “So, I am confident that the Republicans can provide that for me."

Massey said the passion of volunteers is what fuels the Obama Campaign.

"We care so much and we are so hopeful that Obama is going to have another four years to complete the work that he started," Massey said.
