Local Light Display Set to Music

A street in Waynesboro has been attracting more than 50 people a night to see a Christmas light show that has been set to music.

Steven Campbell, 23, used software on his home computer to put on a light display on North Bath Avenue in Waynesboro. The light show is synchronized to the song "Carol of the Bells."

Campbell used a simple FM transmitter to make it possible for people to hear the music on their cars radio. The synchronized music can be heard on the 88.5 frequency.

Twelve thousand Christmas lights, and 2,000 feet of extension cords are used in the display.

"I actually took a week of vacation before Thanksgiving to set these up," says Campbell. "It took pretty much the whole week to get everything organized and all the kinks worked out."

Campbell also said his parents and sister put in a lot of extra work, even during this weekend's ice storm, to set up the display.

This Campbell house isn't the only place to find some interesting displays.

Bob and Doris Campbell, of Stonewall Drive in Waynesboro, have created a holiday light and flag display at their house for four consecutive years. This year's addition is a cross with an original Kevlar helmet to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Flags representing every branch of the military also adorn the house. Some flags were donated by neighbors.

"I'm retired military," says Bob. "Many Christmases I've missed for being that long in the military, and I started putting up the flags and then I had the banner made for Merry Christmas to our troops and veterans."

The Campbells hope to add a Christmas tree with veterans' photos for next year's display.
