Leaders from Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro joined together to kick off the month-long Big Read in the Valley.

In an effort to get young and old reading, the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge launched the event, featuring the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird".

The community will celebrate the Big Read with a full calendar of events from book discussions to film screenings and lectures. The Staunton City Mayor Lacy King says this a great opportunity to get everyone to enjoy reading.

"It shows the unity of the three different communities coming together for one common cause and that's to promote literacy and the reading of literature," says King.

On Sunday afternoon, an actress from the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" will be at the Staunton Public Library to discuss her own experiences during the film.
