Don Knotts' hometown is planning a summer celebration to honor the late actor.

Known to many as Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," Knotts grew up in Morgantown and graduated from Morgantown High School and West Virginia University.

Event organizers are collecting stories about people who remember meeting Knotts that will be shared during a public event scheduled for July 18.

Knott's daughter, Karen Knotts, also will perform her one-woman act "Tied Up in Knotts" at the Metropolitan Theater July 19.

JoAnn Peterson is collecting stories for the July 18 event. She can be reached at (304) 329-6330.
