A new documentary about a West Virginia National Guard unit in Iraq doesn't focus on combat. It shows soldiers training Iraqi police officers and building democracy.
"The Last Mission" debuts 8 p.m. Tuesday on West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
Filmmaker Chip Hitchcock spent 11 days with the 151st Military Police Battalion last year to show the work in Iraq goes beyond conflict.
The mission of the Dunbar-based battalion in Anbar province was to help the country develop the rule of law and create a criminal justice system where no one is above that law.
Hitchcock says the media prefers to focus on the violent and the dramatic.
He hopes to show that the noncombat work of the U.S. military is more important because it helps create a stable and safe democracy.
