Senator Emmett Hanger spoke at the meeting at Freedom Baptist Church in Harrisonburg.
Hanger says that he doesn't support the direct expansion of medicaid.
He says that expanding medicaid could hurt the revenue streams for many hospitals.
Many others who are against expanding medicaid are skeptical on how the money will truly be used.
Many of the people who attended have mixed views on the issue.
"Businesses have been paying for the uninsured, if the uninsured go away one of the key costs for businesses goes down. It's good for Virginia businesses to expand medicaid," says Hanger
"Someone that can handle for themselves, do for themselves, would be better off doing for themselves than letting the government do anything for them, the more the government gets into things the more they mess it up," says Hanger.
Democrats, including Governor McAuliffe want to expand the coverage. The general assembly has until July to pass a budget or possibly face a government shutdown.
