The Golden Apple winner for December is a man who has found an award-winning recipe for teaching this generation.
He mixes a little humor, some adventure and a whole lot of passion in his lessons, and before his kids know it, they are learning about the world around them.
Many teachers often grew up wanting to be teachers, but not Steve Bange, Broadway High School.
He says, "I originally wanted to be a park ranger. I always enjoyed being outdoors and I wanted people to appreciate the outdoors."
But for this Broadway High School science teacher, teaching was a calling that found him.
"I had a teaching assistant at Virginia Tech who said hey, have you ever thought of teaching. I said 'no', but I got the chance to teach and found that I could share my love for the outdoors," says Bange.
A love for the outdoors, a passion for adventure, and a love for teaching kids all make Bange an obvious choice for this month's Golden Apple Award Winner.
It's that unique blend of interest that help Bange take the classroom out of the box and change the way his students see their world.
He says, "To get kids out of this building, I guess I could look back on a lot of moments. I teach the science club here as well. We took a trip to Virginia Beach. We stopped at a lighthouse and had a young man who had never been out of the county. He said 'Mr. Bange, can I go put my feet in the ocean?' I said of course you can. So stuff like that, provide a opportunity that they have never had before."
