This month’s Golden Apple Award Winner had to make a big adjustment five years ago. He left his job of 13 years to teach in Virginia.
William Luders has been teaching at Stanley Elementary School for five years, and before that; "I was a bread man, for 13 years, drove a bread truck," says Golden Apple Award Winner William Luders.
Then he and his wife moved from Iowa to Virginia and he decided to make a career change, so he got a teaching license in the Commonwealth. "It was a huge adjustment, things have changed, the kids have changed, the way things are done has changed," says Luders.
What had not changed was his dream. Luders says his father inspired him and always believed if you're going to do something, do it well and make an impact. "And he did it and all he did was he delivered Culligan Soft Water tanks for 35 years, but everybody knew that he was their Culligan man," says Luders.
And he's the Math and Science man. "I try to be creative, I try to figure out ways to help the kids understand, and be able to conceptualize and be able to apply what they've learned," says Luders.
"He is a good example for students when they grow up," says Fourth Grader Jacob McKay.
"He's funny, cool, nice, he does all kinds of stuff with us, makes us laugh and everything," says Fourth Grader Dwayne Rosser.
His reaction to receiving the Golden Apple Award, "Just humbled and honored and I hope I can continue doing this for many more years," says Luders.
