Health officials say a 9-year-old Virginia boy has died after contracting meningitis

Richmond-area media outlets report Christian Rands of Glen Allen died Friday.

Virginia Department of Health Epidemiologist Keri Hall says tests aren't complete yet that would confirm whether the boy had viral or bacterial meningitis. They're also not sure how he contracted it.

The boy's mother, Amber Strickland, says her son was at a fishing day camp on the James River the week before his death.
