The March of Dimes has given Virginia a C grade on its latest premature births report card.
The annual report card released Tuesday grades states on how far their rates are from the March of Dimes' 2020 goal of 9.6 percent.
Virginia's rate in 2009 was 11.4 percent, up slightly from 11.3 percent in 2008.
The national rate was 12.2 percent, which also received a C grade.
Virginia's late preterm birth rate dipped from 8.1 percent to 8 percent.
The rate of uninsured women declined from 18 percent to 17.2 percent and the rate of pregnant women who smoke fell from 16.7 percent to 15.4 percent.
