During the course of their work, firefighters are exposed to harmful substances, both at the fire scene and the firehouse.
Researchers say some of these substances, are carcinogens, and studies show that firefighters are more likely to develop four types of cancer than workers in other fields.
They were also twice as likely to develop testicular cancer, and have significantly higher rates of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and prostate cancer.
Doctors say the findings should encourage the development of better equipment to help firefighters avoid inhalation and skin exposures.
