Riverheads High School hosted its first Dig for the Cure benefit Tuesday night.

The Lady Gladiators took on Buffalo Gap in a volleyball match, with both sides dressed up in pink.

Players from Riverheads High raised money by selling pink t-shirts throughout the school and community prior to the event. Anyone who bought and wore the "pink shirt" to the game got in for free.

Riverheads head coach Whitney Dove put the benefit idea into action as a way to create awareness for the disease.

She says, "We're hoping to do it annually, maybe get the rest of the district or the rest of the county involved."

Most of the girls were just happy to help, but for varsity captain Kristen Moody, the cause goes beyond the court.

"My grandmother is a survivor. She had breast cancer and lung cancer, so yeah, this is kind of big for me," says Moody.

The Dig for the Cure benefit raised nearly 1,000 that will go straight into a breast cancer research fund.
