High absenteeism has forced the Gilmer County Schools to cancel classes.
Superintendent John Bennett said he canceled school Thursday because 240 out of 429 students were absent the day before. About a fourth of the staff also was ill.
Bennett said daily absences normally total about 25.
No classes were planned Friday because it was originally scheduled as an instructional support and enhancement day.
Classes should resume Monday.
Bennett said he hopes the long weekend will give students and staff members time to recover.

I feel slot of more schools in wv should be closing there r alot of kids out with the virus and some parents choose to send their kids to school knowing that they r sick and that is one reason that all of children r getting sick. The schools r telling the parents to keep our kids home if they r sick but if they do not have enough notes to cover then the schools system want to charge the parents with truancy so that is some reason for parents to send their kids because they dont have the the money to pay a fine. I have three kids with this and a grandbaby getting sick and u all choose to keep the schools systems open if u want to keep them open then let the kid have excused absents and dont penatlize them for their work . If u all want to help this issue then close the schools or dont purnish the kids or parents for being sick. None of us asked for this . My kids goes to petersburg elem and high school lets start here. (petersburg wv)
