James Madison University received a grant for $3.4 million to design a new "Health Bites" Website for the Virginia Department of Health.
The new site will encourage people to make simple changes such as substituting whole wheat flour for regular flour.
The designers hope the Website's interactive features like video and nutrition plans will help to combat Virginia's biggest health problems, including childhood obesity and heart disease.
It is designed to target low-income families who use food vouchers and will use several types of media to get the message to the public.
"We've taken into account a concern about how we can deliver it to people who may not have home Internet access. We are looking into other technologies, like most people do have cell phones and what can we do so that its downloadable," says Rhonda Zingraff, director of JMU's Institute of Health and Human Services.
Organizers are also looking into a deal with local farmers that would allow food vouchers to be used at farmers' markets as well as grocery stores.
