Valley Pharmacists React to Proposed Prescription Bill
Stuarts Draft, Va. A new bill in the works in Richmond could change how residents pick up a prescription.

Joe Yeager has been a pharmacist for 32 years. As the owner of Stuarts Draft Family Pharmacy, he has seen his share of prescription fraud.
"It's definitely a problem," says Yeager. "It's a problem in the Valley as much as it is in Richmond or any place else."
When prescriptions get into the wrong hands, he says you could be dealing with drug abuse, and often illegal drug distribution.
Yeager adds, "It's all costly. It's costly to taxpayers, it's costly to insurers for those kinds of activities."
While pharmacists like Yeager are able to catch many fake or stolen prescriptions before they are filled, that does not mean they are completely protected.
"It does waste the time for good-willed professionals who are trying to do the best job they can for people who really need the benefit of legitimate drugs," says Yeager.
Del. Matt Lohr is hoping a legislative bill can provide a better defense for pharmacists.
Under his proposal, people would be required to show photo identification before picking up drugs like methadone, oxycodone and other opiates.
Yeager says, "I would have a hard time if I had to require patients I have known for 25 years to present an ID."
He also has concerns for many elderly and disabled people that cannot pick up prescriptions themselves.
Yeager adds, "Sometimes they need help from someone outside the family to pick up prescriptions for them and I don't want to see interference with that."
The bill would allow others to pick up prescriptions for a patient. However, that person would have their name and address recorded to follow any potential suspicious activity.
Pharmacists would also not be required to ask for identification if they already know who the patient is.

I'd like to see a law requiring that they not only show ID, but are required to leave a fingerprint too.
