HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Food and Drug Administration is proposing new food labels.

Betty Butcher pays close attention to what she buys. "You want to know about the calories, the fat, and really what is in the food," said Butcher.

She usually understands food labels, but she says the numbers can be hard to read.

That could change if the FDA approves new labels that would have more visible numbers and it would also include added sugars.

Right now, natural and added sugars are listed together which is something Sandra Cubbage, a registered dietitian at Sentara RMH, said separating will help shoppers know what they're eating.

"With this addition to the label, we would be able to tell if something has been added and that is something we should limit," said Cubbage.

Cubbage also said the new labels could also limit deceiving serving sizes.

"When it comes down to serving size because serving sizes are not standardized, they can list the way they want so they can make the sizes smaller so the portions don't look as unhealthy for you as they might be," said Cubbage.

For Butcher, limiting her serving sizes it is important, but not if it comes with a higher price tag.

"I can't really say but for me, if it would be more expensive, I would rather leave it as it is," said Butcher.

The changes would affect packaged foods and not meat, poultry or processed egg products.
