HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Many people around the country take multivitamins to help cure a variety of problems, but one study suggests they may be a waste of money.
The study states that multivitamins are basically a placebo when it comes to helping heart disease, cancer, and memory loss.
John Bell, a pharmacist at Williamson-Hughes Pharmacy, said a good, balanced diet is more important than taking vitamins and that vitamins should just be taken if your diet is poor and doesn't consist of fresh food.
"Fast food and canned items aren't as good. The vitamin's are removed from that so you are going to be more nutritionally deprived and you'll want to use a supplement if you tend to eat more like that. Eating a great, fresh diet is going to be better for your health," said Bell.
Bell said if you think you are in need of a vitamin supplement, speak with a doctor or pharmacist.
