STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- A troubling new link doctors have discovered might have you thinking twice before you reach for that diet soda.
Regular or diet? A new study has found a link between diet drinks and heart disease, even death.
The study found that women who drank at least two diet drinks every day are 30 percent more likely to have heart-related problems and 50 percent more likely to die from those complications. The study included both diet soda and diet fruit drinks.
Researchers said the link could be the result of other factors which include people trying to make up for other unhealthy habits such as smoking.
For some people, the new study is yet another reason to stay away from the drinks.
"I never drink sodas of any kind. I always try to drink water, pure water, things that are healthier. That's my solution, avoiding it altogether," said Laura Burford.
The doctors who performed the study are careful to note, they found an association, which means that at this point, they cannot say the diet drinks or an ingredient in the diet drinks actually caused the heart disease.
