HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- You may notice changes in your skin when the temperatures drop as cold weather and low humidity can lead to itchy, dry skin.

While using fragrance-free lotion may solve the problem, there are other things you can do daily that also help.

If your skin feels dry and itchy, Dr. Mary Mather, a local dermatologist, recommends avoiding long hot showers and using fragrance-free soaps.

After showering, she recommends applying lotion and using it at least twice a day.

For those with more severe cases of dryness, she advises trying Vaseline or coconut oil.

Mather said if you don't take care of your skin, it may get worse.

"In mild cases it is just the sense of dryness and itchiness of the skin and flaking. In severe cases, the skin can actually dry out and crack and become colonized with bacteria and people can get an infection from that," said Mather.

She also said the important thing to remember is that you don't have to spend a lot of money to take care of your skin during the winter. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
