AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) Two cases of tuberculosis have been confirmed at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.
There's no need to be concerned in the Valley though.
Dr. Jena Crisler at Rockingham Memorial Hospital said TB can be fatal, but we're seeing fewer cases of it.
Crisler said tuberculosis is a rare disease and with modern medicine and treatments its effects can be contained.
You can test positive for TB and still not have the active disease.
"Testing positive does not mean you have the actual active disease. Testing positive is exactly what it means: testing positive. You can test positive and it can still be not positive for tuberculosis," said Crisler.
She said you can avoid TB the same way you avoid any other sickness, and that starts with staying out of the way of people coughing.
