The University of Virginia Health System says net income in the last fiscal year rose by $62.1 million to $180.4 million.
Hospital officials attribute a large part of the increase to a
decline in the average length of stay per patient. The average
hospital stay fell from 6.19 days to 5.93 days.
Hospital officials also cite lower costs and a one-time infusion
of more than $11 million from the legal resolution of a nationwide
dispute between teaching hospitals and the Internal Revenue
The Daily Progess reports that the figures were presented Thursday to the Medical Center Operating Board.
