STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) -- A new tool could help in the fight against drugs, simply by showing the mug shots of people arrested.

"They're invading every part of the country now. It's not just in the city and that sort of thing. It's out in the country. It's here. Even in this town," said Wanda Scott, who shared what it's like to be a mother, a grandmother, when kids face pressure about drugs, "You, you worry about your children, your grandchildren, the kinds of things that can happen to them. You really want something better for them. You try to make sure they can see at least a different direction to go in."

The video, "Faces of Drug Arrests," traces multiple people's addiction as betrayed by their faces. Melissa Orndorff, the director of the Office on Youth, explained that seeing the video can have powerful effects.

"Some might have seen a list of the effects of drug use on a piece of paper. It makes you think about it, but when you actually see a picture of someone suffering from those effects, it kind of brings it into focus," said Orndorff.

"It's hurting that particular person, but that person has a family somewhere. So it hurts more than just that one person," said Scott.

Orndorff suggested parents use judgment whether to use the pictures when talking to kids about drugs. She also said it's important to talk to kids about drugs early and try to set expectations for later on in life.
