The health care overhaul had some major impacts on several people in our community, including folks like Ashley McWilliams who works for Harrisonburg Community Health Center.
"Part of health care reform will affect community health centers by increasing the patients that we serve by 50 percent," McWilliams says.
In light of that increase and in celebration of National Community Healthcare Week, the Harrisonburg Community Health Center is moving it's work from the office to the community.
"We're usually pretty busy and tied down to serving our patients, but we're taking this week to reach out to the community in different aspects," McWilliams says.
The center will hold three events throughout Harrisonburg. The first will take place Tuesday at the Harrisonburg Children's Museum at 10 a.m. and will focus on nutrition and dental health for children.
"We are all very concerned with starting our children off here with a healthy first start," McWilliams says.
Event number two targets the area homeless population. At 10 a.m. on Wednesday the center will host a free health screening at Our Community Place. McWilliams says the homeless population often ignore many of their healthcare issues until they become major problems.
"Providing health care to that population is incredibly important because there's a lot of stigmas that they have to overcome to reach out and get healthcare," McWilliams says.
The third event is geared toward farmers and will be held at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
"[Farmers] also are often self-employed and may not have access to health care through their insurance plan," McWilliams says.

Yes, some people are SO ignorant! Going to college doesn't make you smart! These are liberal progressives that want to take over healthcare and then dictate what services you will receive. You just wait! There is NOTHING wrong w/our Healthcare, it's the costs that are out of control. Obama is NOT the answer to anyones prayers except those who will follow blindly. Be careful for what you wish for. Oh, just noticed you're in CA! The state that is Broke & overrun w/illegals using social services. I lived there 20yrs & saw the issues. I'm sure you are reeping benefits of tax funded services. How about just a little socialism, right? Keep CA! This is VA & we won't stand for a President taking our Liberties!
