This map from the USGS shows the extent of the Marcellus Shale formation that oil and natural gas companies are exploring for drilling.
Three groups are hosting a West Virginia screening of a controversial documentary about gas drilling in the Marcellus shale region.
"Gasland," directed by Pennsylvania native Josh Fox, will be shown August 22 in the Performing Arts Center at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon.
Fox will attend the 3 p.m. event. He says the gas industry is selling the American public a lie as it rushes to tap the reserves under West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.
The industry calls "Gasland" a deeply flawed piece of propaganda.
The screening is sponsored by the West Virginia Surface Owners' Rights Organization, the Highlands Conservancy and the Rivers Coalition.
The film won the special jury prize this year at the Sundance Film Festival.
