Attorney General Bob McDonnell visited Harrisonburg on Thursday to try and rally support for some local Republican candidates.

McDonnell spoke at Court Square Thursday afternoon. He offered his endorsement for Delegate Chris Saxman, Commonwealth's Attorney Marsha Garst, and Clerk of Court candidate Chaz Evans-Haywood among others.

McDonnell also spoke about the importance of working to deport illegal immigrants who commit crimes in the Commonwealth. He said he favors building a new jail that would have space to put 1,000 more illegal immigrants behind bars.

"ICE does not have the resources, the money and the bed space in order to properly detain every person who's convicted in Virginia of a deportable offense," McDonnell said. "Until Congress can do what they need to do and appropriate the resources, then we're going to do what we can do to help the federal government do its job."

McDonnell also said police officers need to be able to inquire about the immigration status of those they arrest.
