Nearly 300 new students began class at Eastern Mennonite University Tuesday morning.

EMU President Loren Swartzendruber says the economic slow down hasn't hurt the school's enrollment. It's increased the number of students seeking financial aid.

EMUs total enrollment is nearly 1,500 students.

This year begins a new Masters of Nursing program for the school and several construction projects will also be completed.

Those projects include renovating two residence halls, as well as a theater and fine arts building.

Swartzendruber says, "Higher education is really important in Rockingham County and the whole Shenandoah Valley. Harrisonburg is very fortunate to have four institutions within a few miles. That has a tremendously positive impact on the economy in the area, as well as life in general."

Tuesday is also the first day of class for Bridgewater College students.

WHSV Poll
A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
