West Virginia University is getting $12.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to study capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide from coal-fired power plants.

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced the grant under the U.S.-China Clean Energy Research Center Thursday. WVU is supposed to get the money over five years and match it dollar for dollar, upping the total amount available for research to $25 million.

WVU is going to lead a group that includes universities in Wyoming, Kentucky and other leading coal producing states, several government laboratories and private companies such as American Electric Power.

The University of Michigan is getting another $12.5 million to work on clean vehicles.

You can find this on Wikipedia: "Although a sudden outgassing of CO2 had occurred at Lake Monoun in 1984, killing 37 local residents, a similar threat from Lake Nyos was not anticipated. However, on August 21, 1986, a limnic eruption occurred at Lake Nyos which triggered the sudden release of about 1.6 million tonnes of CO2; this cloud rose at nearly 100 kilometres (62 mi) per hour.[4] The gas spilled over the northern lip of the lake into a valley running roughly east-west from Cha to Subum, and then rushed down two valleys branching off it to the north, displacing all the air and suffocating some 1,700 people within 25 kilometres (16 mi) of the lake, mostly rural villagers, as well as 3,500 livestock." Brilliant use of tax money. C'mon, what takes in Carbon Dioxide? Starts with a P and ends with a lants. Where did all of that carbon in the coal originally come from? The remains of plants and animals.
