Parents in Page County say budget cuts at the schools are putting their kids' lives at risk.
With seven fewer bus drivers this year, some of the county's buses are standing-room only. Angry parents say something has to give.
Wendie Eppart's daughter came home from her first day of school at Shenandoah Elementary with stories about the chaotic bus ride home.
"There are children sitting in the aisles, there are children standing up there was also some sitting on other children's lap," says Eppart.
She says she's outraged by overcrowding on county buses, which leaves little or no room for some students to sit down.
"It's an unsafe, unhealthy environment," says Eppart
Eppart is one of several mothers frustrated by the situation.
One woman sent her daughter to school with a camera phone to document the number of students standing and sitting in the aisles.
"We just ask our parents to be very patient with us. We're working on it daily," says Page County Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Thomas.
The district says it's doing the best it can in a time when money is tight. The current school budget is nearly $5 million less than it was in 2009.
Transportation was cut $131,653 through route consolidation and eliminating seven bus drivers.
"We have a little overcrowding which we have approximately 30 days to fix by law, so we are working on that and we want everybody to be able to arrive at school safely and depart in a safe manner," says Thomas.
Maximum capacity on each bus is 71 people. Thomas says some buses are more than full so he may add another route in southern Page County.
Eppart says there's no price on her child's safety, and she doesn't care where the schools find the money to make those changes.
"Anywhere possible as long as the children are safe," says Eppart.
Eppart has other complaints with her daughter's bus route including the fact that there are high schoolers riding with elementary school children. She is also concerned that it takes nearly two hours for her daughter to be dropped off in the afternoon.
Thomas says they hope to have the bus situation resolved in a couple of days.

This is totally unexceptable & should Not be allowed..What ever happend to puting the saftey of our children first..There is Nothing safe about "Having our children standing up or seting in an isle a school bus or any vehile of that matter even if it is only for 30 days with a the bus accidents happening latley" What is more important the Budget or our Children's saftey? If there is a shortage in seats then i think they need to run an extra school bus & put our Children's saftey First..They want to say a school bus is the safest ride No it isant an accident can happen at any given time just take a look back at all the school bus accidents Major or Minor..."Put Our Children First" Thanks Sandy Hedrick of Broadway Va
here we are all back at it again and its the same old thing but just give us a chance to get the routes straight. yes we need one route in stanley also so lets c if they get it too. like shenandoah did.when u get new routes please be patient with driver for the routes to learn the kids thank you and god will be there for us all.
First, let me say that i am not a parent, however, i do care about the welfare and safety of children. What i don' understand is why is that is it's against the law for a child to not be in a carseat, but it's ok for that same child to stand up on a bus with 60 other children?? For those of you that have stated why don't the parents take/pickup their children..how can they do that when they have to be at work before 8 am and dont get home til 5 pm??Why dont you offer to provide those children transportation?? The school system knew months ago just about how many students would be riding buses..page county's population hasnt changed that much in the last few years...i believe that safety should be priority #1!!..also, it's illegal for a commercial bus..ie.tour buses,etc...to have passengers standing while the bus is moving..so again, why is it ok to have 5 & 6 yr olds standing on a school bus??..as for the teacher who made the comment about the funding on the fence, funds can be redirectd
