The Harrisonburg Police Department reports two people were shot on Kelley Street early Sunday morning and the search is continuing for the persons or people responsible.

Around 12:30 a.m Sunday, two people were shot in the 200 block of Kelley Street. Both male victims were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital.

The Harrisonburg Police Department is not releasing the identities of the victims but they do say one is from Richmond and is 30 years old. He was shot in the arm and has been treated and released from the hospital.

The second victim is a 32-year-old male from Harrisonburg. He was shot in the torso and was later taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

Neighbors and those witnessing the shooting say this isn't the first violent incident that's occurred in the past year, and it has them concerned.

"It was about 12 o'clock last night and I heard about seven gunshots, and then a car slowly come up the hill. So I went inside and locked the door. It's a little scary, so especially having family in this area and kids, so it's definitely at little nerve wracking," says Kelley Street resident Kaylee Shipway.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying the suspect or suspects in this case. They are asking anyone with information to call Crime Solvers at 540-574-5050.

Unfortunately it is an abandoned property that has become the local hangout so there is no owner to say they are loitering or trespassing. After they lost funding for the weed and seed program the police have stopped patrolling. So on any given weekend there's lots of drinking going on, arguments break out, and then someone goes to get a gun... The city should seize the property, bulldoze the building, and put a police substation right there.

At one time, HPD had the Kelley/Myrtle street area cleaned up. They had a substation in the area and the Weed and Seed program was active. What happened to Neighborhood Watch there? If you have it, it's not working. Might be a good time for a refresher course. No need to be afraid of these street punks. Get Neighborhood Watch going and stir in it a little bit each day. Ask City Council and HPD about re-establishing a police substation in the area. This is a great program and I encourage every one to get involved before more shootings and other crimes take place there. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
